Tongo Island

Tongo Island is an uninhabited island located in the southwestern corner of the Republic of Albania, situated in the Ionian Sea, within the municipality of Saranda. It is a very small island with limited surface area.

Located at the southernmost tip of Albania, near Cape Stillo, it lies close to the border with Greece. Access to Tongo Island is possible by boat or dinghy.

Ftelia Bay

Ftelia Bay lies at the southern edge of Albania, precisely where the state border with Greece runs. The bay forms a narrow inlet stretching inland with an entrance width of 5 cables (approx. 925 meters) to the north. It extends eastward for 4.5 cables (approx. 830 meters), then turns southward for 3.5 cables (approx. 650 meters).

The shoreline of the bay is steep and rocky, forming cliffs with a sharp descent near the coastline. On the eastern side of the bay, a mountain stream flows in, especially during rainfall, carrying solid material which it deposits at the river mouth.

Depths in the Bay

  • The 5-meter isobath lies 50–70 meters from shore, and in the southeastern end of the bay, it is 200–225 meters offshore.

  • The 10-meter isobath curves eastward but does not reach the end of the bay, stopping 250 meters short of where the bay turns south.

At the entrance to the bay lies the rocky Tongo Island, stretching northwest-southeast with a length of 250 meters and a maximum width over 100 meters.

  • North of the island, the depths are greater than to the south.

  • The 5-meter contour to the north lies 20–25 meters from shore, while on the eastern side, it lies 45–50 meters offshore.

Maritime Use of the Area

Tongo Island lies entirely within Albanian territorial waters.
Small boats can find shelter in Ftelia Bay from all wind directions, while larger vessels may only be protected from northern directions, as the bay remains open to the south and southwest.

Fokianos Strait

The Fokianos Strait is formed between Cape Stillo and the cape to the east of Fokianos. The strait extends inland for 4 cables (approx. 740 meters) to the north, with an entrance width of 2 cables (approx. 370 meters).

  • The depths in the strait are good, with the 5-meter isobath lying 20–25 meters from the shoreline, allowing for safe passage for small vessels.
