Boat Trip Vlora Destination Sazan Island

Explore Sazan Island’s Unique Landscape

Sazan Island is Albania’s largest island, located 18 kilometers northwest of Vlora city. Its highest peak reaches 342 meters. Covering 5.7 square kilometers, the island features a rugged coastline stretching about 15 kilometers, mainly made of monolithic rock formations. It lies at the entrance of the Bay of Vlora, extending 4.8 kilometers from southeast to northwest, with a maximum width of 2 kilometers.

The terrain is mountainous and mostly rocky. Two deep valleys cut through the island, separated by a central ridge that rises 87 meters high. One valley descends west-southwest, ending at the Strait of Hell (“Ferrit”), while the other slopes northeast toward the Bay of Saint Nicholas. These valleys create two nearly conical peaks, which from the southwest look like two separate islands. The northern peak is taller, with elevations of 337 and 331 meters, while the southern peak reaches 308 meters.

Sazan slopes steeply on its western, southern, and northeastern sides. Laurel, mastic, and shrubs cover these steep slopes, which drop sharply into the sea, forming jagged cliffs and caves. Historically, pigeons nested on the western cliffs. On a clear day, visitors can spot the island from up to 35 miles away.

Sazan Island’s Strategic Importance During the Cold War

During the Cold War, Sazan Island served as a key naval base. The military stationed patrol boats, coastal artillery, and various equipment on the island. Around 10,000 people lived there, mostly families of officers. The People’s Army considered the island and the Bay of Vlora the most strategic front line in the event of war. Consequently, the government gave special treatment to those serving on Sazan.

Starting in 1997, the Italian navy stationed patrol boats and ships on Sazan Island to combat illegal trafficking and assist in rebuilding Albanian naval forces and border police. After 12 years of cooperation, the Italian naval forces left the island in 2009.

Tourism and Activities on Albania’s Largest Island

Since 2015, tourists can visit Sazan Island. However, the island lacks food services, bars, restaurants, and markets. Visitors should plan accordingly before traveling there.

The Western Coast of Sazan: Cliffs, Gorges, and Wildlife

Two gorges descend on the western side: the Gorge of Hell and the Gorge of the Devil. The Cape of Seagulls, the island’s most prominent cape, lies northwest of the Gorge of Hell. This area features steep cliffs and caves, with dense forests of pine trees and other species nearby.

The eastern side slopes gently into the sea without steep cliffs, especially in its central part. It also contains two bays: the Bay of Saint Nicholas to the northeast, which is the largest, and Japrak Bay to the southeast. Cape Kallam stands north of Japrak Bay, while Cape Saint Nicholas lies southeast of the port. Cape Mixho is north of Saint Nicholas Bay. The island’s southern and northern capes mark its longitudinal extremes. Both capes slope steeply into the sea and stand out as the island’s most prominent points.
